Program Description: E-LEEP Ghana 2011

The Emerging Leaders’ Extraction and Environment Program (E-LEEP) will be hosted by University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana in July, 2011 as part of a joint arrangement between the University of Ghana and Duquesne University, and is funded by a grant from the U.S. State Department. Its overarching purpose is to train emerging young leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors in strategies for handling the complex societal, economic and environmental challenges which arise from the extraction of natural resources.

Our coursework and lectures will include:
  • Ghana – Political and governance history from independence to present
  • Ghana – The people and Socio-cultural setting
  • Overview of Extractive Industries in Ghana 
  • Institutional and Legal Framework for Extractive Industries Oil and Gas 
  • Industry in Ghana (including downstream e.g. salt mining, etc. and upstream industries e.g. bunkering, refinery)  
  • Fisheries Sector: Aquaculture and associated environmental impacts 
  • Forestry Sector / Mangrove extraction / Wildlife
  • Charcoal production in forested and northern areas of Ghana
  • The Mining Sector including small scale mining (Galamsey)  
  • Sand and stone quarrying including Salt mining
  • Social aspects of extractive industries – overview
  • Week Long Field Trip: Kakum National park, Elmina Castle, Busua beach resort, Obuasi / Tarkwa, Aburi, Akosombo, Dodi Island, Ada Songhor salt mines, Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), tema harbor, and other mining, cultural, and national heritage sites
  • Music, dance and drama 
  • Artistic impressions – paintings etc. 
  • Ghana – Festivals and funerals 
  • Environmental aspects of extractive industries – overview
  • Energy generation and usage in Ghana: Economics of energy usage, Environmental concerns, Social concerns 
  • The Akosombo Dam: Environmental impacts, Social impacts 
  • The lower Volta communities impacted by the Dam: Lessons for the Bui Dam project
